Less popular keywords can convert better indeed. Lots of people jump to popular keywords, those ones which are more expensive too. This is one way that a beginner could fall down to bankruptcy. Having a reliable keyword tool to point out which keywords are more competitive and which not, which are more searched for and which not is a good thing, but the choice belongs to us after all. Ranking for long tail keywords is better and the ranking easier.
For instance, i use the iSpionage kewyord tool and i wanted to search for a used car in UK. When tying "used cars uk" the searched volume was 90.500 searches/month, while "searched cars in uk" was 14.800, and "used cars in uk only" - only 590. Can be easily seen the long tail keywords have lower competition. So it is better to rank for those than the main keywords.
